The quiet approach: how buyer-side outreach works

Confidential acquisition is a discipline, not a trick. Here is what actually happens between 'we want it' and 'it's yours'.

· 2 min read

The best acquisitions are quiet ones. From the outside they look simple: a company wanted a domain, and one day they owned it. Inside, there is a deliberate sequence.

1. Assess before you approach

Ownership, history, registrar, prior sales and any signals of the owner's situation. You never open a negotiation you have not researched.

2. Approach neutrally and anonymously

A representative makes contact without revealing the end buyer. The framing is calm and non-urgent, an interested party exploring the name, nothing more.

3. Negotiate against evidence

Comparable sales and a pre-set walk-away number keep the conversation anchored to the market rather than to the buyer's balance sheet.

4. Close through secure escrow

Funds and the domain move through neutral escrow so neither side carries counterparty risk. Only at the right moment does identity become relevant.
